We are currently recruiting for an Automation Operator/Programmer to join our Stage Staff team.

Reporting to our Head of Stage & Automation Supervisors, you will be responsible for programing and operating the Glyndebourne automation systems to support the productions of the Company. 

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To operate the TAIT automation system and any other systems in shows and changeovers.
  • To program the automation system for upcoming productions.
  • To assist and act as spotter while others operate the system.
  • To assist with the maintenance of all stage related automated equipment.
  • To be able to inspect and troubleshoot automation equipment.
  • To assist Automation Supervisors and other technical staff in finding automation solutions for production design requirements.
  • To assist on at least two Festival shows with regard to planning, installation and operation of automated equipment on those shows.
  • To ensure that all machinery, equipment and accessories are correctly rigged and used according to best practice including the integration of safety systems
  • To ensure best practice regarding use of harnesses and working at height.
  • To cooperate with other departments in relation to their needs regarding automation and other effects.
  • To translate the automation moves to manual flying and operate any manual flying, on tour and in other venues.
  • To communicate effectively on stage and safely integrate our work on stage with other departments including Stage Management
  • To develop an understanding of Navigator and other TAIT systems.
  • To keep clear, accurate and accessible records of faults, maintenance and show plots.
  • To ensure that all scenery is maintained to the highest standard.
  • To assist with fit-ups, get outs and all technical aspects of show production including loading and unloading lorries and other non-automation stage-related work.
  • To participate in the best practice of Health and Safety and to work alongside others in a safe and efficient manner
  • To develop a working knowledge of the Glyndebourne Repertoire
  • To archive and keep records of show specific automated effects
  • To undertake, if required, all manner of set refurbishment, painting, cleaning etc, and to assist in the maintenance of productions throughout their run.
  • To deputise for Supervisor when required
  • To carry out all other duties where required

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Previous experience of operating automation systems in a theatrical setting.
  • Experience of flying and rigging.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of safe working practice within a theatrical environment
  • To be able to complete manual handling
  • Good timekeeping
  • Able to work unsocial/long hours

Desirable

  • Mechanical/stage engineering knowledge
  • Electrical/Electronic knowledge
  • Experience of inspection and use of rigging equipment
  • Knowledge of IQ and/or ‘Navigator’ based automation systems
  • Extensive knowledge of automation systems and SOP’s in other theatres.
  • Working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and regulations
  • Experience writing Risk Assessments and Method Statements
  • To have a driving licence

Special Requirements

  • To travel, when required, on Glyndebourne business

Rates of Pay, Hours and Benefits

We can offer a salary of £917.68 per week .

The contractual hours of work are 48 per week however you may be required to work additional hours to meet the demands of the role.

We offer 6.6 weeks holiday per year pro rata.
